It is often the case that, at the end of a concert, a soloist is requested to perform an additional item, not listed in the programme, in other words an encore. In general, the piece that is chosen is short and emphasises the expressive qualities of the instrument as well as the musical ability of the soloist. The listener should go home remembering the encore, so if the wrong piece is chosen it can jeopardise the entire evening. It is the case that the final piece played at a concert is the one that remains in the memory of the listener. In this collection I have aimed to include a series of works that are suitable as encore pieces due to their duration and technical content. All of the pieces included in this volume are transcriptions of works by famous composers which were originally written for other instruments and have been adapted for flute. This book aims to broaden the repertoire of suitable encore pieces for flute that demonstrate the many different nuances and expressive qualities of the instrument. This collection should enable you to put into practice all you have learnt about the tone quality and colours available to the flute. On the CD which accompanies this book you will find a complete recording of each piece which you can use as a guide before performing the solo part with the piano accompaniment.
