The growing demand for studies that focus not only on technical skill but also on tone quality and expression has prompted Mitropa Music to commission a series of such studies by many composers from around the world.
This collection contains fifteen studies that make use of personal interpretation as well as techniques that have been gained through previous experience. Most aspects of flute playing have been covered in the wide range of styles presented in this book and each study requires specific skills such as fingering technique, breath control, tone quality, articulation, phrasing and dynamic contrast. The varying approaches that the composers have used provide an excellent means to broaden the musical experience of the developing flautist.
The enclosed CD provides a demonstration of each study but this should only be used as a starting point as creativity is the key for interpreting each study. The choice of tempo is also personal and do not worry if at first you are unable to perform the more technical studies at the quicker pace demonstrated on the CD. These studies aim to pose musical challenges for which you can set yourself goals in order to progress.
